Teaching Your Children About the Dentist

I work as a clerical assistant in a pediatric dental office, and I am commonly surprised by the number of children who are scared of the dentist. Many kids think that cleanings will be painful, and they believe they will be scolded for eating sugary foods. Children are also extremely frightful of the noises made by the water spraying tools and the suction devices. As adults, we know that dental cleanings are easy and free of pain. We need to impart this knowledge to our children so they know not to fear the dentist. I have provided blogs that will help you speak with your child about dental care. Good communication, trips to your own dentist, and online videos can assist you. So will good brushing techniques that will make your child proud to see the dentist. Enjoy my articles so you can help your child build oral care confidence.

Are You Wise Enough To Know If Your Wisdom Teeth Have To Go?

Alfred Kelley

You may only hear about wisdom teeth when people talk about having them surgically removed – but is this a necessary procedure for everyone? A qualified professional, like Cherry Creek Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, is the only one who can definitively determine whether your wisdom teeth have to go; but, you may find it helpful to learn about the situations that typically require removal.

If Wisdom Teeth Are Visible

When your wisdom teeth are visible because they've broken through the gums, they often require removal. The presence of these extra molars in the back of your mouth can cause your other teeth to shift, which can in turn can cause pain or mess up any orthodontic treatment. There may be cases where wisdom teeth are fully grown in but cause no problems; however, this is fairly rare. If your wisdom teeth suddenly break through your gumline, even partially, it is time to see your dentist or oral surgeon.

If X-Rays Show Bad Teeth Positioning

When you get x-rays at the dentist, your wisdom teeth may be fully visible even though they have not started to erupt. The x-rays will reveal whether the wisdom teeth are positioned to grow in badly. If this is the case, wisdom teeth removal may be recommended so that the other teeth won't be damaged when the wisdom teeth eventually erupt.

If a Cyst Grows Around Wisdom Teeth

If a cyst grows around wisdom teeth, the problem must be addressed promptly to prevent damage to the jawbone. A cyst may develop when a wisdom tooth is impacted. Impacted teeth are those which are trapped and grow beneath the gum, or beneath the teeth above them.

If You Are in Pain

While the x-rays show the position of your teeth, the x-rays just can't show exactly how you feel. Even if the x-ray images don't show any signs of problems, you might be feeling considerable pain. Your wisdom teeth may be beginning to grow even if they are too deep in the jaw to be seen on x-ray yet. Sometimes, your dentist or oral surgeon may recommend removal of the wisdom teeth as a preventative measure.

The recovery time for wisdom teeth removal depends upon several factors, including age. If you are in your 30s or beyond, your recovery may be longer; but, many people begin to recover after only a few days. You may be limited in the foods and beverages that you can have for the first 24 or 48 hours. While the surgery and recovery may not be fun, the long term relief from wisdom teeth problems will be well worth it!
